PERFECT

We bought it in Arles
one happy afternoon,
the ceramics displayed 
against whitewashed
walls. We chose
a little bowl, in porcelain,
splaying out to a fine rim,
deep black outside,
celadon within.
Perfection.

We brought it home,
placing it carefully in a 
whitewashed alcove, then
somewhere along the way
the rim got chipped,
marring the pot, so it was
no longer perfect.

But today it still sits
in its own place, more relaxed
perhaps, with its blemishes,
no longer needing to be
so precious.
